Happy Birthday Munchkin

As most of you know, Munchkin is our cat. She does not get much written about her and since she is a pretty unassuming kitty, that seems to suit her just fine. However, everyone deserves to have their birthday celebrated and despite her meows of protest I wanted to let everyone know that this is her special day. At least we think so. Like our Pug rescues, Munchkin's actual birth date is a mystery to us.

Munchkin

I vividly remember that cold January morning when we found her outside under our porch. I was living with my brother Mark and he was actually the one that found her. He was late to work that morning because he stayed to coax her out from under our front porch. He brought her in and we put in her a box with a blanket. She was so tiny! It was obvious she was no more than 6 or 8 weeks old. We never saw her siblings or mother. We don't know if she wandered off or if she was left behind by her mother but either way we knew she wouldn't survive in the icy North Carolina weather on her own. So we brought her in with the plan to find her a home. All my co-workers teased me that she wasn't going anywhere despite my insistence that we weren't keeping her. Of course she won me over and soon I knew I couldn't let her go. I named her Munchkin because she was so tiny. One of my biggest regrets is that I failed to take photos when she was little. Kitten-hood passed by so quickly. Thankfully I have been much better about photos in the past few years and I now have quite a collection of her. This is one of my favorites:

It brings back so many memories. It is of her sleeping in the spare bedroom at our home in Sonning, England. She would sleep on the bed because Charlie couldn't jump up and chase her and it was right behind my desk so she was near me. When she felt like exploring she would cross over to the window and jump out onto the roof. From there she would jump into the tree and climb down into the garden. The first time I saw her do that my heart stopped, but she has always been heartier than I have given her credit for. She has made the Trans-Atlantic crossing twice (once by plane and once by ocean liner) as well as numerous cross-country moves. When I worked as a travel nurse taking 3-month contracts at a time she would always make the move with me, quietly sleeping in her carrier as I drove down the interstate. She always adapted well and made anyplace we moved into her home.

Even when she had to learn to live with a dog (and a Daddy) she was amazingly tolerant.

Introducing a puppy to the mix proved interesting, but still she remained pretty easy-going about the whole thing. Now every time we bring a rescue into the house she just looks at me as if to say "Another one? Don't we have enough?" but she tolerates the sniffing like a pro.

I love her so much. She has been with me through incredible highs and devastating lows throughout the years. I cannot imagine my life without her. As she is now in her senior years I try to cherish the time we have together. She means more to me than she will ever know. Happy birthday Munchkin-face!

Evil Giraffe

Oh sure, it looks innocent enough. But don't let it fool you for a minute. It is pure evil that must be destroyed!

EvilGiraffe

What else could be the explanation for an adorable angel like this:

GottaLuvMe

and a sweet cuddly boy like this:

Winston

becoming locked in a vicious battle such as this?

Even Phebes was drawn in on the attack. Thankfully Denny is much more sensible and only watched from the sidelines.

Alas, the giraffe survived this round but our brave warriors will return to fight another day. Victory shall be theirs!!

Winston's Day Out

Our foster pug Winston had a meet & greet this past Sunday at the Pearland Dog Park off of Hwy 288. It was our first trip there and we were suitable impressed with the facilities. They have some "just for fun" agility training equipment out for everyone to use and I have a feeling that Phebes would just love that. We'll have to make a point to take her there now that the weather is starting to cool.

Anyway, we had decided to take Denny along for moral support. Last weekend when I took Winston to the Houston Pug Meet-up at the Danny Jackson Dog Park, he was rather shy. I'm not sure if it was the sheer number of dogs there or the fact that he didn't know anyone, but regardless he seemed more comfortable hanging out with the fence than the other pugs. Since this is most definitely not how he acts at home I was worried about him being so timid at his meeting. We decided to take Denny so he'd be with a friend and it would also give Denny a chance to run around like a loon. So we dressed them in their finest harnesses and set off for Pearland.

So we arrived and met the person we were there to see who has a young female pug that needs a companion. I'm not quite sure what happened, but we could tell it wasn't going to work out. Poor Winston started acting all shy again. Denny was a bit more lively, but Winston just kept getting sniffed by big dogs and running off towards the fence. After about half an hour he started to loosen up, but by then we knew it was too little too late. Though we had accurately described how lively he is when playing with Phebes & Charlie, it wasn't enough to convince this person that he wasn't the shy, timid guy he was acting like at the park. So we said our goodbyes knowing Winston would not be leaving us just yet. Which makes me wonder....was that Winston's plan all along?

He DOES seem to be settling in...

Phoebe - our pretty tom-boy

Phebes most definitely does not think of herself as a girly Pug; you can see that from the Halloween Costume photos from earlier.  But there are times when she just looks absolutely gorgeous.

Phebes

I just found this shot I took of her in August.   She has the most wonderful eyes.

Denny - Flaunting it!

We have a nice wide pavement around our pool.  Plenty of room for three or four pugs to make their way around.  Denny though seems to think he needs to walk right near the edge!

For some strange reason he NEVER wants to walk on the concrete.  He just likes to flaunt with danger!

Flaunt it!

He has of course fallen in on several occasions! (A good swimmer he is!)

Winston.... our foster Pug!

This is Winston.  He is our current foster Pug from PugHearts, the rescue we help to run.

Winston is going to have a meet and greet at the weekend, and I am dreading it actually going well - because I will have to give the little guy up!    He is like a older and smaller version of Denny. Cute guy!

SONY DSC

This was taken a couple of days ago when he had been sleeping at my feet.  He had only just woken up!  He looks so sleepy!

Here he is about half an hour later sunning himself by the pool.  I love the way he sits.  It's all about comfort!

Winners!

As promised, we have the results of our Halloween costume contest as well as some behind-the-scenes footage from our fashion show:

Best Dressed - Charlie:

YouWILLVote4Me

Yes, Charlie did INDEED work this outfit. I don't know if it was the hat, the lasso or the fringe...anyway you cut it he just looks so adorable!

Best Attitude - J.J.:

ElvisPugsley

In fact, he was SO easy going about the outfit and even the hat that we have to wonder about his past. Gail, is there something we should know???

Most Patient - Denny:

IAmNOTAPuppet

Poor Denny. The humiliation he has to endure having us for parents.

Best Diva - Phoebe:

ImReady4MyCloseup

What can I say - the girl didn't want to be in a dress. Oh well, Mommy won that fight!

Most Understanding - Winston:

CantReachToy

He was a very good sport about the whole thing - even the fact that his uniform didn't fit quite right and hindered his playtime. He's a sweet little guy that is going to make someone a fantastic companion. We love ya Winston!

Now as a special treat we bring you some of our out-takes:

Iamtooasmall

Part of Phoebe's issues with her outfit was that the dress was a bit too small. Next year, we get a Medium!

GetItOffMe

Phoebe used her feminine wiles to lure Winston into helping her out of her costume a bit earlier than we had planned.

SomebodyHelpMe

Denny's costume required his front paws to be covered with a horrid polyester material which made him slide all over the sofa. We're sorry Denny.

WhatToWear

Of course Phebes wasn't the only one being a bit demanding. Charlie had a difficult time deciding which outfit to wear.

Actually that's not true. He was supposed to be the astronaut but kept ripping his helmet off. So we let him be sheriff instead. Maybe that was his plan all along....

Anyway, we had a great time and I'm sure that deep, deep down all of our furkids did as well. I believe we have just started a new tradition at our house!
